The Unsurprising Power of Work: Finding Joy in the Grind
"At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: ‘I have to go to work—as a human being. Why should I feel annoyed if I’m going to do what I was born to do?'"
— Marcus Aurelius (Meditations 5.1)
We all have different definitions of happiness.
Some people find joy in parties and luxuries, while others, like you and me, feel most fulfilled when pushing themselves towards a goal. There’s something deeply rewarding about working — not just for success but for the sense of growth and progress it brings.
Why Work Feels So Rewarding
There’s a common belief that work drains you, but people like me find the opposite to be true. The more effort I put in, the more I enjoy the process. It’s like a muscle — the more we use it, the stronger it gets. The challenges that once seemed overwhelming start feeling achievable.
Right now, I’m focused on improving my communication skills. Every day, I make it a point to write and speak, refining my ability to express myself. And I take my work seriously — no excuses, no shortcuts.
Like many people, I’ve had my share of setbacks. Recently, I suffered a hairline fracture, which made movement painful. It would’ve been easy to take a long break, but I reminded myself that small steps still count. I did take a day off to recover, but beyond that, I stayed consistent.
It’s not about forcing ourselves to work at all costs — it’s about building resilience and learning to push forward, even when conditions aren’t ideal.
The Struggle Against Self-Doubt
One of the biggest barriers to success isn’t a lack of skill or opportunity — it’s self-doubt. I’ve noticed that sometimes I hesitate in my writing, not because I don’t have ideas, but because I second-guess how they’ll be received. What if my words aren’t perfect? What if they don’t resonate with others?
But I know that growth demands courage. If I hold myself back out of fear of awkwardness, how can I expect to share my work confidently with the world? The reality is, we all start somewhere, and feeling uncomfortable is part of the journey.
Success Is a Matter of Time
As I sit here writing, I’ve already put down more than 300 words. My goal is 500. It’s a challenge, but well within reach if I stay focused. This, I’ve learned, is the essence of success — it’s about showing up, putting in the work, and trusting that results will follow.
There’s a simple truth many of us have experienced: we are rewarded in proportion to our efforts. Sometimes, success feels delayed, but maybe that’s because something greater is on the horizon. Other times, we receive exactly what we deserve, yet our own minds convince us that it’s not enough.
The Bottom Line: Work, Stay Grateful
At the end of the day, we don’t have full control over outcomes, but we do control how much effort we put in, which is a blessing.
And if you’re on a similar path, keep going — not just for success, but for the joy of the journey itself. Work has a way of paying off, often in ways we never expected.
Over to You
Have you ever asked yourself what activities give you real joy? What’s the next smallest action that you can immediately take to pursue them?
Think about it. Take action. Time is slipping away — and it won’t return.
